Re: Bands with theremin
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 6:49 AMProbably the most well-known "classical" soloists:
Lydia Kavina www.lydiakavina.com/
- her CD has some impressive playing.
Clara Rockmore en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clara_Rockmore
- You can see Clara Rockmore playing in the film "Theremin", which is a great movie generally if you haven't seen it.
I'm sure there's some other good players out there, but most people I've heard tend to just make "creative noise" and don't have much control over the instrument. Granted, the thing is exceptionally difficult to master. I'd also be curious to find bands that integrate theremin into the music in a meaningful way.

Re: Bands with theremin
Sat, June 2, 2007 - 5:11 AMof course, the guy in Portisehead did some nice work with the Theremin.
Also, the wonderful 50's movie soundtrack composer , Bernhard Hermann (who also did Hitccock's Psycho) used some beautiful theremin on, for my money, the best science fiction movie of the 50's, "The Day the Earth Stood Still"

Also, it has to be mentioned that the brilliant pop composer/producer Brian Wilson, played wonderful Theremin
on the monaural masterpiece, "Good Vibrations"
I just saw a band play the Maker Faire at the San Mateo Fairgrounds last weekend which feature a theremin player in a
kind of exotica 50's rock band. I can't remember their name but if you google, Maker Faire 2007 Theremin main stage performances,
I imagine they should come up.
